From an initial concept by L22, together with WOOD-SKIN we brought an ambitious vision to life — an intricate ‘ripple effect’ wall installation — by transforming digital design into a tangible structure previously unachievable with traditional methods.
Leveraging advanced computational design, complex algorithms for developable surfaces and tessellation were developed and applied to obtain precise geometric constraints, in order to achieve the seamless transformation from concept to construction. We implemented a digital-twin approach early on, which streamlined the design, manufacturing, and assembly processes. This method allowed real-time assessments of deformations, tensions, and structural loads by comparing the digital model to the installed version, ensuring precision and structural integrity.
The result is a lightweight, 40-sq/m modular surface composed of unique, three-dimensional segments. Using a dry assembly technique, the entire structure can be disassembled and reconfigured, creating flexibility in reuse.
The ceiling element at the pavilion entrance also reflects this blend of innovation and modularity — a testament to advanced mathematics meeting architectural art.
